Our Solution:

We have designed an 'Immersive Food Journey' or 'Virtual City Food and Culture Museum' called Foodbeam, which offers a live museum experience to gamify the process of promoting food culture in New York City. It aims to attract customers by sharing fun facts about each store and the diverse types of food that have evolved in the city.

User Journey:

This application will guide players to explore New York City as they walk down the streets, searching for pre-existing ‘markers’—food icons placed near selected restaurants and stores. Through a Pokémon Go-like ‘food hunting’ journey, players will unlock their next steps and build their own food universe by collecting these checkpoints.

HI-fidelity UI Design Prototype

Returning to the focus on creating an immersive experience and transforming the entire city into a museum, how can we integrate XR technology into this application?

We developed a series of AR prototypes using Unity and AR Foundation. Through research and exploration of AR Foundation’s capabilities, we incorporated feasible interactions into these experiences, including plane detection, clickable objects, road guides, and more (see images below).

Three key features of this AR experience are:

1. Guided Navigation: The app logo is used to guide users to the designated store locations.
2. Interactive Storytelling: Upon detecting the markers, hidden animations and stories associated with the markers will be revealed.
3. Interactive Quizzes: Occasionally, small quizzes will appear to engage users. Players can click on the panel, answer correctly to unlock the next location, or win a food coupon.
